What Is On-Page?

On-Page: A certain webpage or the elements of that particular page.

On-page refers to everything visible on a particular page of a website. The mobile view and UX of a page is also part of the on-page. Relevant, original, likable pages show up higher on the search results.

On-page is one of the four broad types of SEO, the other three being technical, content, and off-page, though they have some overlap.

With on-page SEO, each individual page is treated as a separate entity and all the parts or elements of that page are fixed or improved upon.

On-page refers to both the content and HTML parts of the page. All the aspects of the page are taken into account, and Google shows the pages that are most relevant to the search query on top.

Content includes headings, paragraphs (body text), and meta tags.

Headings are the main headings (H1) and subheadings (H2, H3, H4, etc.).

Meta tags are the page title and description that appear in the search results. The description is also called the meta description. This is not to be confused with the GMB description.

The page’s URL that appears in the address bar is another on-page element.

Images, videos, and the alt-attributes used for said images and videos are also a part of the on-page.

The CTA (call to action) constitutes on-page as well.

Keywords are one of the most critical elements of on-page. A keyword is a word or phrase that describes the focus of the page, such as ‘plumber Norfolk VA’ or ‘New York taxi service’.

The HTML part of on-page covers the coding, backend tags (<strong>, <body>, etc.), structured data markup for rich results in the search snippet (also known as ‘schema’), and hyperlinks both to another page on the same site or another site.

Page titles and descriptions are measured in characters and each letter, symbol, and space is 1 character.

They are also measured in pixels on the screen for more precision. For example, the letter ‘w’ takes up more pixels than the letter ‘i’.

There are also other on-page elements like social sharing, commenting, dwell-time, loading time, search engine bot accessibility, and overall page design and page layout.
