What Is Technical?

Technical: Relating to crawling and indexing of a site.

Technical work for Map-Pack rankings is primarily tasks performed to enhance a website from a technical perspective. It is also known as technical SEO.

Technical SEO is one of the four broad types of SEO along with content, on-page, and off-page SEO. They aren’t mutually exclusive and there is some overlap between them.

There are many technical parameters which include the following:

  • Indexing
  • Canonical
  • Rich results
  • Internal links
  • Broken links
  • Schema
  • XML sitemap

Indexing is the process by which a site’s data is stored in the search engine’s database. Technical improvements are made to ensure search engine spiders crawl and index the site in an effective manner.

Widely used code include the canonical tag [<link rel=”canonical”>]. It is used to indicate that two pages have the exact same content and that Google should only pay attention to one of them, thereby avoiding being penalized for duplicate content.

For example, a canonical tag may be added to a page with the UTM code link.

There’s also the nofollow tag [<rel=”nofollow”>] which can be added before a hyperlink to prevent SEO equity from being passed on to the linked site from an external link.

Internal links are links from one page on Site X to another page on Site X, while broken links are links that when clicked either don’t work or lead to a ‘Not Found’ error page.

The secure sockets layer (SSL) certificate is also a part of technical SEO. Sites with the certificate have HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) in their uniform resource locator (URL) as opposed to just HTTP.

XML is short for eXtensible Markup Language. An XML sitemap helps search engines index pages by informing them about pages on the website that are ready to be crawled.

There is also more than one type of sitemap. These include:

  • HTML sitemap: Allows site visitors to easily navigate a website
  • Image sitemap: Increase chances that an image can be found in image search results
  • Video sitemap: Makes sure search engines know about all the video content on a site
  • Mobile sitemap: For feature phones, a mobile sitemap can be created.

There are other technical components such as technology used, performance, mobile, robots.txt, site structure, etc.

The robots.txt tag [/robots.txt] prevents search engines from indexing particular pages or the whole site.

The code and tags added in the backend of pages also constitute technical SEO. There are tags for headings, bold, italics, color, font, text size, and image alt-attributes, though most editors don’t require these to be changed directly in the code.

The changes made at the backend reflect how the site appears to users.
